It’s 1758. The young tailor James Colville is cast ashore in Annapolis, Maryland where his life for the next seven years is on sale to the highest bidder, a wealthy plantation owner from Elizabethtown, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
But life is complicated. James falls in love. In search of a real future and in danger because of his past, James and his beloved are forced to flee into the Great Dismal Swamp and then into the Piedmont of North Carolina, where the Regulator uprising and then the American Revolution threaten to undo his growing family. His resilience and innate ability to find options where none seem possible are severely tested.
Then James hears some old familiar voices.
